What am I? 11-8-12

Today's personal narrative mini-lesson:  descriptive writing
We built from yesterday's reading of, Mrs. Flowers, a short story in which students listened for and recorded rich descriptive language that creates mental imagery and interest.  We took the skills to the next step while in core groups by mimicing the teacher's example of describing something so that others can guess its name.  Students were encouraged to use descriptive words that evoke the 5 senses.

WHAT AM I?
I HAVE A CRISP SMOOTH OUTER SKIN THAT CAN MAKE A SOUND OF A CRUNCH ONCE BITTEN.  RED, YELLOW, GREEN ARE MOST OFTEN MY COLORS.  HOWEVER, IF I AM DOWN ON THE GROUND TOO LONG, I MAY BECOME B ROWN.  ON MY TIPPY-TOP YOU’LL SEE A SKINNY ROUGH BROWN HANDLE WHICH HELPS YOU PINCH AND CARRY ME.  WHEN MY DELICATE SKIN IS PEELED BACK, A GLIMPSE OF WHITE PEEKS THROUGH AND ON MY VERY INSIDE, YOU’LL FIND THE SCRATCHY INNER PART OF ME~ IT IS WHERE THE START OF A NEW TREE WILL BE.
Caught Ya!

The daily grammar bell work comes from the Giggles in the Middle book.  In today's "Caught Ya", students identified and learned:  homophones, when to start a new paragraph, how to use commas with nouns of direct address, that punctuation goes before quotes and to capitalize proper nouns and more.  We are loving this new program and so are they!
