Essay Reminder
Many of you have not turned back in your descriptive essay on your favorite place. Congratulation to those of you who worked hard! Words have power and can take readers places. I enjoyed reading about your favorite spots and some, I could imagine being there!!! What skills, lessons, or activities did we do that worked for you to help learn about descriptive writing? What questions might you still have?

Some skills that I learned were that comparisons really help a reader visualize. Also that descriptive words shouldn't be used over and over again, because it will bore the reader.
ReplyDeleteWhy thank you Ms. Kaufman! I did work hard!XD LOL! The skills that I have learned from you to help me in descriptive writing is grammar. You have helped me so much in using adverbs and adjectives to describe. A question I still have on descriptive writing is that I want to know how to get to the point of the subject.(You said I had to work on that in my "Michigan Hero" essay.)
ReplyDeleteThe questions I still have fromthat project are is there ever a time when you can be over descriptive?
ReplyDeleteYa thanks mrs kaufman i try. But ya i definatly got help from the ways of searching for things i get great information now.
ReplyDeleteI learned the most from the similies activity. It helped me understand how to make the reader visualize what you are writing.
ReplyDeleteI really tried to have you imagine what my favorite place was. I learned that descriptive writing is used everyday, when you just talk to your friends.
ReplyDeleteOne skill that I learned from this essay is don't be repedidive. Use neticket is another one.
ReplyDeleteThe skills that i learned where that if you rrepeat something over and over that people will think that your writing is dull or boring. I have also learned to make sure you know your facts before you start writing anything.
ReplyDelete@anna p...you are right. When a reader gets the feeling the writer is using descriptive language to "impress", it is a big turn off. Personally, I just quit being interested.
ReplyDelete@katelyn......getting to the point! One way to do that is to really narrow down your focus in your pre-write. For example, I wouldn't write about my "summer vacation" but rather when I took the kids to King's Island. And, even then I could narrow down my trip to a single even at the amusement park like how riding the "Fire Hawk" made me feel like I was going to die. I like to stress how important pre-writing is! Spend a lot of effort in this step. Narrow down the topic then organize the details around it. :)
ReplyDelete@katie h....absolutely! Being over descriptive becomes too exhaustive to the reader. Just use descriptive language thoughtfully. It would be better to be sparse and deliberate rather than exhaustive.
ReplyDelete@chandler g.....that's great! I am glad that the lessons on internet searching helped you!!! Be sure to share your knowledge!
ReplyDelete@connor.......what is neticket?
ReplyDeleteI have learned that you must use strong verbs. You want to use a good hook to get the reader into your writing. In your conclusion you want to hook back to your begging
ReplyDeleteI learned about nettiquette, and that when you get way too into detail that the writing becomes hard to follow and i quit being intereasted in the piece im reading.
