Endings and Beginnings

Last week Thursday and Friday, students finished a beginning of the year write on who their hero is.  This was an in-class non-guided writing assignment to give the students a chance to put to test all of their knowledge of what makes writing good.  Each essay will be scored on a 3-point rubric and re-written at the end of the year to measure growth based on 8th grade writing lessons.

This week, students will begin vocabulary unit 1 and the first unit test will be September 30th.  Please take the time to review with your student a little each day.  A good suggestion is to have the student use the word properly in a sentence versus always quizzing the definition, synonym and antonym.  The goal is for students to recognize the words in text and have crystal clear understanding and also to use them in speech and written word properly.  Note:  as the student uses the word in a sentence, it must be in a way that shows the meaning of the word.  Bad example:  Rubble was in the back yard.  Good example:  After my father and I tore down the old brick shed, there was a large pile of rubble left to pick up.

Today, students listened to an audio c.d. of unit 1 vocabulary and started book work, turned in a vocabulary study sheet, turned in a silent reading record from last Friday and went over grammar work from last week.

Homework:  vocabulary unit 1 synonyms and antonyms, grammar page 9, and independent reading
