Today, students continued their study of descriptive writing. We listened to a short story all the while identifying good descriptive language including "specificity" like Bedford Junior High versus a school. We took a look at different types of beginnings AKA: leads, grabbers and hooks and saw examples written by teachers in the building. Students were able to see how to write 3 different beginnings for one topic and decide which was the best. In other words, what made them feel like they wanted to hear the rest of the story.
HOMEWORK: to practice, students are sketching their room and describing it by showing us what the room looks like versus telling us. I can't wait to hear them tomorrow!
